Businesses in Scotland have been gearing up for some important changes to the laws covering employee rights. This year will see some fundamental changes to employment law which will have an impact on employers.

Extensions to discrimination law and right of mothers to transfer up to six months of maternity leave to fathers are amongst the key changes.

To help companies come to terms with these and other issues, Lindsays is holding a series of breakfast seminars at its offices in Edinburgh and Glasgow over the next few weeks.

The first of the series took place on 23 and 24 March, and tackled disciplinary proceedings, with tips on how to conduct hearings, how to dismiss for misconduct and avoid unfair dismissal claims.

In April, the seminars will look at absence management and provide guidance on managing short and long-term absences, different types of leave, dealing with cases of stress at work, and the implications of the Disability Discrimination Act (April 27, Edinburgh; April 28, Glasgow).

Finally, Family Rights is the subject of the final seminar in May, when the firm will review developments in maternity rights, flexible working and other types of parental rights.

Dawn Dickson, Partner, is one of the key presenters. She said: “Employment law is constantly changing, and 2010 will certainly be no exception with some fundamental changes that employers really do need to understand.

“There is no point in businesses having well constructed policies and procedures if their managers are not aware of how changes to the law can affect them, and if they do not have the information they need to properly put these into practice.”
