Terrorism overseas continues to be a real threat to British citizens living or travelling abroad, with attacks over the past few years spanning the globe - from Las Vegas and Barcelona to Berlin - shattering the illusion that these popular holiday destinations are immune to terror attacks.

The 2015 Tunisia terrorist attack saw thirty-eight people fatally injured when a gunman opened fired at a busy beach resort in Port El Kantoui.

An inquest into the attack found that the response from Tunisian police was questionable, and it was reported that some officers were discovered to be hiding or running in the opposite direction from the attacker. Tunisia has now introduced new anti-terrorism measures, which includes the deployment of reserve troops at places that are potential targets from terrorist attacks.

Whilst many governments have implemented anti-terror measures, there are some things you can do to make sure you stay as safe as possible when travelling abroad.

What should I consider when travelling abroad?

  • Do your research, and be aware of the destinations that are considered a ‘high risk of terror attack’ by the Foreign Office, which include Germany, Australia, Kenya, Thailand, the USA and the Maldives. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office provide detailed advice and country-specific guidance on the risks of travelling.
  • After you have booked your accommodation, find out more about the local area and take a note of the contact details for the nearest British Embassy or Consulate if you are visiting a high-risk country.
  • Keep up-to-date with travel advice using social media @FCOtravel or Facebook.
  • If you are travelling on an all-inclusive package, ensure that you have the contact details of your tour representative saved in your phone and have a full discussion with them upon arrival about any concerns that you may have.
  • Make sure that you have appropriate travel insurance in place for every person travelling.
  • When out and about have a fully charged mobile phone and know where you should go in the event of an emergency.
  • Have more than one means of payment with you and enough money to cover any unexpected costs.
  • Be vigilant in public areas and places and look out for anything suspicious, and report anything of concern to authorities immediately.

What can I do if I have been involved in an incident abroad?

If you, or anyone you know has been injured as a result of a terror incident abroad, you should contact a specialist solicitor as soon as possible.  This is a complex area, and there can be numerous parties involved in the claims process.

We will be able to discuss the circumstances surrounding the incident and provide advice as to the best possible route to secure compensation for you, whether that be through insurers, or the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority.
