Pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson are planning to lodge an appeal after they have been ordered to pay compensation amounting to $4.7bn to 22 women.

The women had brought legal actions against the company citing that the talc products the company produced caused them to develop ovarian cancer, six of whom have since died.

During the trial, which was held in Missouri in the United States, the jury heard that the women contracted cancer after decades of using talcum powder based products by the global company.

Defence lawyers for the women argued that Johnson & Johnson were aware of the existence of asbestos within the products, and had been since the 1970s. However, they had failed to advise their customers of any such risks.

Currently, in the United States, there are thousands of claims against the company relating to their talc based products.

Although there have been no cases cited in the UK, it is suspected that thousands of individuals may be affected, presenting a potentially strong case for a class action in the near future.
