recent news article has highlighted that asbestos-related cancer, which is an illness usually suffered by older people can affect the younger generation.

Kirsty List was aged just 34 years old at the time of her death and was given the heart-breaking news earlier this year that she was unlikely to survive until Christmas. She sadly passed away last month, leaving her five year old daughter.

The cause of her mesothelioma still remains unknown and unfortunately this is all too common a scenario.

She believed that she may have contracted it when she was a pupil at school or whilst working in pubs as a barmaid.

Ms List began feeling unwell in September 2015 and 6 months later was treated for gallstones. Doctors found a tumour around her gallbladder and following a biopsy, it was discovered that she had cancer. Ms List was treated with five different chemotherapies, all without success. She was put on palliative care after finishing her last course of treatment around a year ago.

Ms List had attended a primary school in Reading, Berkshire which was built in the 1980s and was “riddled with asbestos”. The secondary schools she later attended in Reading and North Devon also had asbestos. Ms List had also worked in pubs over a 13 year period, some of which underwent renovation.

The number of people developing asbestos related conditions from exposure to asbestos in public buildings is increasing as a result of the high percentage of buildings which still contain asbestos.

Unfortunately, this is not the first case of a young person dying of asbestos related cancer in the UK. Leigh Carlisle, 28, died in 2008 following a two year battle with mesothelioma. It is believed that she must have been exposed to asbestos as a child.
