A former British Rail worker who recently died from asbestosis released a video which was recorded shortly before his death to highlight the issue to other sufferers.

In the 1950’s and 1960’s, the fire-retardant properties of asbestos were thought to be ideally suited for use in the railway industry. It was used for lagging pipe work and boilers, and it was a component of brake pads and insulating materials. Asbestos sprays were also frequently used to insulate train carriages and engines. The repair and maintenance of the carriages and engines involved a continuous cycle of asbestos use, and the dust and fibres found their way into workers’ hair and clothes.

It’s abundant use during the 1950’s and 1960’s has led to many deaths of railway workers who have gone on to develop mesothelioma and other asbestos-related cancers.

Mr Jowett, who released the video warning others of the dangers of asbestos exposure, was responsible for making prototype diesel cabs which involved lining them with the asbestos material. He stated that he was not made aware of the risks or receive any protective equipment to prevent exposure.

He only began to experience breathing difficulties in the last few years, and was later diagnosed with asbestosis. In the months before he died, Mr Jowett was awarded compensation for contracting the disease and the associated health implications.

Although British Rail ceased to exist as of 1997, the Department for Transport is legally responsible for any claims.

If you or anyone you know has issues following exposure to asbestos, our specialist team can help you and determine whether you have a claim.
