Professional experience
Susan is a Director in the Commercial Property group. She has developed particular strength in advising developers and lenders in the acquisition and security of development sites, dealing with site assembly, servicing issues, the creation of title conditions and development documentation. She also ensures a seamless transition to onward sales, providing practical input in relation to conveyancing aspects. Most recently Susan has been acting for a substantial landowner in the Highlands in relation to an option agreement which has led to one of the first major planning applications in the Highlands.
Working closely with developers has provided Susan with experience in planning law and she has acted for objectors to both Edinburgh Tram Line 2 and the Edinburgh Airport Rail Link in relation to compulsory purchase threats. Her experience in planning and development has also allowed her to provide key input on renewable deals, having been involved in transactions for both the development of wind farms and biomass.
Susan also acts for landlords and tenants in lease transactions and has, as a result, built up particular expertise in the franchising sector and advises on all related property matters including leasing. She appreciates the bespoke nature of a franchised business and one of her clients operates seven successful Pizza Hut franchises in Scotland. Susan also advises franchises and more general clients in the hospitality and leisure sector on the property requirements associated with Liquor Licensing. She understands these intricacies having acted for Martin Wishart and Tony Singh on licensed property matters.
