The economic downturn has created new challenges for Scotland’s charities. Many have had to find new income streams, and make difficult decisions, about joint working or whether to merge with other charities. They have also had to find smarter working methods and adopt more modern governance regimes in order to survive.
To meet these challenges, charities need specialist legal advice. We are well known for our work for charities, the not-for-profit sector, and the social enterprise sector. We act for charities like Citizens Advice Scotland, SYHA and the Scottish Association for Mental Health.
We have particular expertise in relation to heritage charities and have worked with many such organisations on the construction and property issues that are specific to their sector.
As part of our commitment to the charities sector, for the past three years we have supplied pro bono services to members of the Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO). More recently, we have also started offering pro bono advice to members of the Association of Chief Officers of Scottish Voluntary Organisations (ACOSVO).
We have extensive experience in specialist charity law, and can help you with all aspects of governance, reorganisation and company law. But that’s not all we do. Most charities need advice in other areas too – employment law (including issues relating to volunteers), property law, construction law issues for heritage charities, contracts, how to protect intellectual property assets, data protection, how to comply with the new Companies Act 2006, and countless other topics. We can guide you through all such issues
We also host and organise training events for charities, and speak regularly at conferences and other events to help you stay up-to-date with relevant areas of law.
Our Charities Group comprises lawyers from different disciplines and is headed by Alastair Keatinge, one of the few accredited specialists in charity law in Scotland
