Owing to the finite supply of fossil fuels and to concerns regarding nuclear generation, the UK government is committed to generating 15% of the UK’s electricity from renewable sources by the end of this decade. Wind power is expected to provide about 75% of the total renewable output. In order to fulfil their political commitments, the UK and Scottish governments are addressing problems with the planning regime and the transmission of electricity through the national grid.

We advise landowners and developers on wind, hydro, biomass and solar projects. Developer clients include Community Wind Power Limited and Gamesa Energy UK Limited. We have also advised a significant number of land-owning clients on the preparation of the appropriate legal documentation.

Our reputation in this sector is based on our ability to advise clients on all aspects of the legal process. The delivery of a successful project requires not just an understanding of the renewable energy sector but also a wider understanding of rural issues.

We have a team of people drawn from different specialisms who work together on renewable energy projects to deliver a successful outcome for clients. We have lawyers prepared to make the extra effort for clients – to listen, to innovate, and to do everything required to make a complex project come together.

We can help on all aspects of renewable energy projects, such as:

  • negotiating and searching land options
  • facilitating funding arrangements, preparing the legal framework
  • advising on the protection and application of renewable energy technology, and preparing licensing and supply agreements
  • property matters such as negotiating land options and leases, dealing with title issues
  • setting up trading subsidiaries and advising on the issues within the renewable energy sector
  • advising on procurement and contract formation issues and all other documentation needed.

We have good cross-border experience in all these areas, and can advise on transactions both north and south of the border.
