A decade of development: Scott’s journey to Team Leader

When Scott joined Lindsays as an Office Assistant in Dundee, he saw it as a “wee job to keep him going” after university. A decade and various promotions later, he’s still with the firm and leading a team of six people.

How it all began

I joined Lindsays in 2016 when I was 21 and had just decided to leave university. I started in the Office Services team, processing documents, managing the systems and just doing what I was told, really!

Two or three years later, I was made Deputy Team Leader, and then during Covid, I was asked to come into the office. I did that job on my own, picking up more tasks, and I think that people recognised the effort.

Afterwards, I took on the Team Leader position. Initially, I was managing three people, and through the merger with Miller Hendry in 2023, I gained a couple of staff. Including myself, I now lead a team of six.

Training and support

I’ve had some formal training organised by Lindsays, and I’ve also had a lot of support from my manager, who is the Facilities Manager, overseeing all the locations. She’s always really good to go to if I’ve got any questions. And I’ve got my equivalents in the other offices that I can bounce things off as well.

Merging with Miller Hendry

When we did the merger, my team was tasked with getting all their documents – thousands and thousands of them – into our systems and off-site storage in the proper way. We were also responsible for getting all their people set up in our offices and making sure they were OK with everything they needed – at a time that must have felt quite uncertain for them.

Why I stay

Lindsays is a good place to work and I’ve been able to progress through the firm. Here in the office, everyone gets on really well and you can go to anyone to talk to and ask for help if you need it. There are lots of people here who are really close friends.

Work-life balance

I work 9 to 5, but my partner often works early shifts. When we had our son a couple of years ago, that meant that I was having to drop him off at childcare; plus we have a dog as well, so I was ending up coming in late.

I approached the HR department and asked if I could change my hours, coming in a bit later and just having a half-hour lunch. They were totally fine about that, and the change was really easy to make.
